How Can the Younger Generation Understand Jainism ?
Gyan|12 Oct 2026
Today's younger generation does not lack access to information. With just a few seconds on a mobile phone, they can explore information from around the world, and videos can make even complex subjects easier to understand. Yet many young people are still unfamiliar with the deeper principles of religion and its scriptural teachings. The reason is not simply a lack of time; it is also the need to rethink how religious knowledge is taught and understood.
Jainism has an exceptionally rich tradition of knowledge and philosophy. It offers profound insights into non-violence, Anekantavada (the many-sided nature of truth), Aparigraha (non-possessiveness), self-discipline, and liberation. However, when a young person encounters terms such as Jiva, Ajiva, Asrava, Bandha, Samvara, Nirjara, and Moksha for the first time, understanding their meanings and how they relate to one another can be challenging. When a subject feels difficult from the very beginning, interest in studying it may gradually decline, even when genuine curiosity exists.
Therefore, the need is not merely to encourage young people to read about or learn religion, but also to make Jain philosophy easier to understand.
Begin with the Fundamentals
The study of Jain philosophy should begin with its fundamental concepts. A clear understanding of the seven tattvas, nine padarthas, six dravyas, the Ratnatraya—the Three Jewels of Samyak Darshan (right faith), Samyak Jnana (right knowledge), and Samyak Charitra (right conduct)—the Panch Parmeshthi, and the five great vows can provide a strong foundation for further study.
For example, if a student does not understand the concept of karmic bondage, exploring the Jain theory of karma in depth can become difficult. Similarly, a young person who understands Anekantavada can learn to examine different aspects of an issue rather than viewing it from just one perspective.
Religious education should not be limited to theoretical knowledge. These principles should be explained in the context of everyday life so that young people can understand how Jain teachings can guide their behaviour, decisions, and thought processes.
Rethink How Jain Pathshalas Teach
Jain pathshalas run by temples and community organisations can play an important role in this effort. Alongside classes for children, separate learning programmes can be organised for young people at different levels of understanding. Instead of relying solely on memorisation, these classes can use discussions, practical examples, quizzes, group activities, and real-life situations to explain philosophical concepts.
Today's generation wants to understand what a principle means, why it matters, and how it can be applied in everyday life. Teaching methods should therefore encourage questions and thoughtful discussion rather than focusing exclusively on memorising answers.
Pathshalas can develop a structured curriculum that introduces Jain terminology and fundamental principles at the beginner level. Students can then gradually progress towards a deeper study of the Agamas, religious literature, and Jain philosophy. The beliefs and scriptural traditions of both the Digambara and Shvetambara traditions should also be explained in a balanced manner, drawing upon authentic sources.
Make Scriptural Knowledge Accessible Through Mobile Phones
Modern technology can help make Jain knowledge accessible to a much wider audience. Not every young person can attend a pathshala regularly, but many can study through their mobile phones. Educational videos, easy-to-understand articles, podcasts, digital books, and online classes on the fundamental principles of Jainism can help bridge this gap.
For example, learning series such as “Seven Tattvas in Seven Days,” “One Jain Principle Every Day,” or “30 Fundamental Terms in Jain Philosophy” could offer an accessible starting point. Each topic could include a simple definition, an example from everyday life, and references to authentic sources for further reading.
Similarly, simplified explanations of difficult scriptural passages, glossaries, and topic-based study guides could make learning more effective. The purpose of technology should not be to replace the scriptures, but to help people access them and understand their teachings more easily.
Modern Ways of Learning, Without Changing the Principles
Authenticity is essential when studying Jainism. Presenting religious knowledge through modern methods does not mean changing its principles or reducing the depth of its philosophy. The real need is to present the original teachings in their proper context, using language and formats that the younger generation can understand.
Collaboration between Jain scholars, monks, Aryikas, teachers, and young people with expertise in technology could be especially valuable. Scholars can help ensure the accuracy and authenticity of the content, while those familiar with modern communication platforms can help make it more accessible to a wider audience.
Passing Knowledge to the Next Generation Is the Real Goal
The real purpose of connecting young people with Jainism is not simply to encourage them to participate in religious activities. It is to develop their ability to study independently, ask questions, and reflect upon philosophical principles.
When foundational knowledge is readily available, pathshalas adopt new teaching methods, and authentic educational resources reach young people through digital platforms, more of them can take meaningful steps towards understanding Jain philosophy in a systematic way.
Preserving a tradition is important, but passing its knowledge to the next generation in a way they can understand is equally essential. Finding the right balance between the depth of Jain philosophy and the needs of modern learners can provide a meaningful way to help young people build a stronger connection with their rich spiritual and intellectual heritage.
